What to Expect at a Test Session
Taking your amateur radio exam is a straightforward and friendly experience. Here’s how a typical CARS VE session works so you know exactly what to expect.

Before You Arrive
Register for an FRN if you don’t already have one.
Review the exam material or take a few practice tests.
Gather your materials:
  • A valid photo ID
  • Your FRN
  • Pencils and scratch paper
  • A simple calculator (optional)
  • A copy of your current license if you’re upgrading

Check‑In
When you arrive, a VE team member will greet you and help you sign in. You’ll complete a brief form (605) with your personal information and license details.

Pre‑Exam Instructions
The VE team will explain:
  • Testing procedures
  • Allowed and prohibited items
  • How to ask questions
  • How to signal when you’re finished
  • They’ll also verify your ID and FRN.

Taking the Exam
You’ll be seated in a quiet testing area. Exams are multiple‑choice and untimed, so you can work at your own pace. Most people finish in 15–30 minutes.

Grading
When you’re done, the VEs will:
  • Collect your test
  • Grade it on the spot
  • Let you know immediately whether you passed
  • If you pass, you’ll be invited to attempt the next license level at no extra charge.

After the Exam
If you earned a new license or upgrade:
  • Your paperwork will be submitted to W4VEC
  • W4VEC will forward your results to the FCC
  • Your new license or upgrade will appear in the FCC database within a few days
  • You’ll receive instructions on how to check your status and download your official license.

A Friendly, Supportive Environment
W4VEC VE sessions are run by volunteers who want you to succeed. Whether it’s your first exam or your fifth upgrade, you’ll find a welcoming team ready to help guide you through the process.
