Do I need to be a CARS member to take a test or attend a class? No. All classes and VE test sessions are open to the public. Membership is encouraged but never required.
How much does it cost to take an exam? W4VEC‑affiliated exam sessions typically have a small exam fee (usually around $12). This fee goes directly to the VEC to process your results.
What should I bring to a test session? Bring a valid photo ID, your FCC Registration Number (FRN), pencils, and a basic calculator if you want one. Full details are listed in the “What to Expect at a Test Session” section.
Do I need an FRN before I test? Yes. The FCC requires all applicants to have an FRN. You can create one for free on the FCC CORES website. Can I upgrade my license at the same session? Yes. If you pass your exam and want to attempt the next license level, you may take the next test at no additional charge during the same session.
How long does it take to get my license? Most new licenses and upgrades appear in the FCC database within a few business days after your exam is processed.
Do I need to bring a calculator or phone? A calculator is optional. If you bring one, it must be non‑programmable or have its memory cleared. Phone... no, you can't Google or use ChatGpt.
Can I take online exams through CARS? Some W4VEC teams offer remote testing, but availability varies.
Are the classes required before taking the exam? No. Many people self‑study, but our classes are a great way to learn the material and ask questions.
Who administers the exams? Volunteer Examiners (VEs) who are accredited through W4VEC, one of the National Volunteer Examiner Coordinators.
